• Gauhati University, Guwahati was established on 26 January 1948 under the provisions of an Act enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly and is the oldest university in Northeast India. As of 2024, the University is esteemed as the 45th-ranked institution in India, securing its position within the top 100 educational institutions nationwide
• Internationally, the QS World University Rankings ranked Gauhati University in the 601–650 band in Asia in 2023.

The 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) judged the institutions and universities in the country on various parameters. The rankings of the 2024 NIRF ranked many universities from NE states among best in India. Many institutes from this region are ranked for the first time.

Institutes from North-East Regions also come out good but as compared to other regions, a lot needs to be done to improve education in the region. Among the universities from NE region in the overall category, Indian Institute of Technology IIT Guwahati was ranked 9, Gauhati University ranked 57, National Institute of Technology NIT Silchar ranked 92.
